  Peter DeBono, Co-Chairman

Mr. DeBono is one of the Co-Chairmen of the MPC Theatre Department. He received his Master's Degree from UCLA and made a living in the LA area as an actor before returning to Monterey to re-join the Department. Some of Peter's directing credits include Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Broadway Bound, Front Page, and The Odd Couple at MPC, and I'm Not Rappaport at the Western Stage in Salinas. Our Town which Peter directed in October of 2006 marked his 145th directorial achievement.

Gary Bolen, Co-Chairman

Mr. Bolen joined the MPC faculty in Fall of 1999, and is now one of the Co-Chairmen of the Department. Previously he had been a Theatre instructor at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita beginning in 1990, and served as that department's coordinator from 1994-98. He received his B.A. and M.A. in Theatre from Cal State University Fullerton and an M.F.A. in Acting from UCLA where he was the winner of the Jack Nicholson Graduate Award in Acting and a University Grant Award recipient.
   
A working professional actor since 1979, Gary has appeared on stages from L.A. to Houston in addition to dozens of television prime time dramas, movies of the week and sit-coms. He was Dr. Parker in "The Young and the Restless" and Harry Shaw on "General Hospital" along with numerous roles on "Days of Our Lives". He also appeared in the teen hit "Empire Records." In 1995 he was nominated and elected to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and has served as an Emmy Blue Ribbon Peer Panel judge.
  
Since arriving at MPC, in addition to teaching, Gary has directed Table Settings and Hold Me! in the SRO Studio Theatre as well as Follies, Grease, The Rocky Horror Show, Cabaret, Annie, Urinetown, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Guys and Dolls on the Morgan Stock Stage. Also during this time he has played Walter Burns in The Front Page, Alfred P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady, Felix Ungar in The Odd Couple, Harry Brock in Born Yesterday, George Bailey in Merry Christmas, George Bailey! and Pseudolus in Forum. Gary also appeared in The American Musical on both the SRO and Morgan Stock Stage.

Dan Beck, Technical Director

Mr. Beck began his theater career as a student at MPC, he then transferred to San Francisco State where he received a double degree in Theater and Industrial Arts education. Dan is uniquely qualified for his role here where he teaches Theater Workshop and Lighting classes; designs scenery and lighting; is the Technical Director; and is in charge of everything technical in both the Main Stage and Studio Theater.

Constance Gamiere, Instructor & Costume Shop Manager

Ms. Gamiere has a Masters Degree in Arts Education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She also has a Pupil Personnel Degree in Guidance and Counseling, and is the MPC Counselor for the Creative Arts Division. Connie has been Costuming Instructor, Costume Designer, and Make-up Instructor since 1974 at MPC. She has designed costumes for over 150 stage, TV, and film productions. It is her pleasure to match up interested students with courses of study that challenge and develop the next generation of Theatre professionals.

Eric Maximoff, Master Carpenter

Eric started his career here at MPC. From Monterey he traveled to Las Vegas to work at the MGM Grand, among other venues, before landing a gig with the Cirque du Soleil. With the Cirque he helped install and run Alegria in Biloxi, Mississippi (or as he so fondly refers to it, the Redneck Riviera). We are grateful to have his experience and enthusiasm back while he continues his education. In 2005 Eric began his most ambitious project ever, when he and his wife, Olga, had their first child, Ivan.

Steve Retsky, Master Electrician

Mr. Retsky has been with MPC since 1989, currently he is an Instructional Specialist, Master Electrician, Lighting Lab Instructor, a carpenter, a Lighting Designer, a sometimes Sound Designer and/or Engineer, and a whole bunch of other things. Steve prepared for his multi-faceted role by earning his B.A. degree from Temple University and then freelancing in Southern California for 6 years. There he worked in legit Theatre, Movies, Music Videos, and all of the major Amusement Parks, ending up as the Master Electrician at South Coast Repertory Theatre. From there he went into educational theatre; first at Western Stage, then at the University of South Carolina, and finally here at MPC. In 2001 Steve became a proud member of the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 611. In 2006 he earned his Masters of Arts in Education.

Part Time Faculty

Laua Akard, Instructor

Ms. Akard, a Peninsula native, has extensive experience teaching dance and theater here in Monterey County as well as throughout California and Nevada. She has choreographed numerous productions for MPC including Follies, The Rocky Horror Show, It’s a Grand Night for Singing, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Grease and Annie among others. In addition to her directing and choreography, Laura teaches courses in Movement for Actors and Audition Techniques for the Theater. Along with her assignments at MPC she teaches privately throughout the community. She recently finished working as choreographer on the 25th anniversary tour of Luis Valdez’s Zoot Suit as well as the local production of Zoot Suit at El Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista. In 2004 Laura’s original, full length ballet, “Treasures, Gifts and Dreams,” with an original score by Dr. Bruce Lee, was produced by Dance Kids of Monterey County at the Sunset Center in Carmel.

Bobbi Boes,  Instructor - Screenwriting

Boes holds a B.A. in Creative Writing and a M.F.A. in Film and Screenwriting from UCLA. Having written and produced two seasons of a National Endowment and Student Emmy award winning television magazine program for UCLA in addition to her commercial music video credit.  Boes has worked as a script doctor on several independent projects, including the recently released April Moon.  Boes is a recipient of the Samuel Goldwyn Writing Award for her screenplay, Sacramento; in addition to receiving the Bridget and Bob Colleary Award for Best Romantic Comedy, as well as the Stephen Gershenson and a Screenwriting Diversity Award for the screenplay, White Trash Cooking.

Boes’ screenplay Necromancer was adapted and performed for the stage in 1997. She also received credit as playwright for the musical The N.C. (1996-2002). Her musical, In a Nutshell, premiered in 2006. Boes is currently a contender for the Sundance Screenwriters/Directors Lab with her script, Rami’s War. Boes began her teaching at UCLA and has teaching experience in all three levels of the California higher education system and holds membership with the Writers Guild of America West and the Dramatists Guild.

Lee Brady, Instructor - Playwrighting

Ms. Brady is an award winning San Francisco playwright who, like everyone else working in theatre, wears many hats. She is an actor, a director/producer, as well as a long time drama critic for the Pacific Sun newspaper. And, for the past twenty years, Lee has taught a popular playwriting course each Fall in the Theatre Dept of MPC.

Conrad Selvig, Instructor  

Mr. Selvig began his theatrical career here at MPC in the mid 60's, then moved on to get his Bachelor of Arts Degree at UC Davis. His interest focused on directing and set design. From there Conrad went to the Professional Acting program at ACT (American Conservatory Theatre). His fascination with innovative forms of theatre grew while directing new pieces in college and while working in London "on the Fringe", and throughout Holland. He returned to Monterey, and ultimately to MPC in 1980. Since his return Conrad estimates that he has directed around 70 shows including Story Theatre, Fantastics, Jumpers, Revenge of the Space Pandas, On Golden Pond at venues around the peninsula, and Buried Child and Six Degrees of Separation on the Morgan Stock Stage. Currently he teaches our off-site classes producing and directing most of our Outreach Productions at Cherry Hall, a space where he has initiated several renovations of the theatre.
